Our Story

Boston Boatworks builds innovative, advanced composite luxury yachts and Coast Guard Certified vessels with people who value the best. We are a passionate team, connected to the water, connected to our customers, and connected to our craft. At Boston Boatworks, we don’t build boats for people, we build boats with people. Our skilled team and customer family of knowledgeable owners has decades of experience. Together we have elevated the performance, safety and comfort of our boats, the sensibility of our high-tech boatbuilding expertise and our commitment to excellence in construction and customer care. With this culture and these values, we strive to be the best, global semi-custom, performance boatbuilder.

Established in 1996 on Boston’s Inner Harbor, Bost Boatworks was founded to apply aerospace industry composite materials, engineering and design to build custom racing boats that were lighter, stronger, stiffer and faster. Since then, we have added yacht systems, yacht cabinetry and yacht finish to our proprietary advanced composite skills, expanding our offering to include fuel-efficient luxury motor yachts. With in-house engineering,sales and customer care we scaled our processes up to limited-production capacity, providing artisan-level craftsmanship on repeatable basis.

Our first application for limited production of custom-quality yachts was MJM. Founder Bob Johnstone was attracted by Boston Boatworks reputation for building excellence and asked us to partner with him on his new venture, MJM yachts. The result was a new standard in fuel efficiency, performance and luxury that broke with the industry’s ever-increasing reliance on cheap horsepower that gulps fossil fuel. We are proud to have built over 345 MJM yachts and happy owner relationships over more than 20 years.

Today, BB partners with the Barton and Gray Mariner’s Club on the brand new Zurn Yacht Design Daychaser 48, a modern, open plan, luxury day boat for B&G’s members and for retail sale. We are currently building these on a 4-week pace, with room in our schedule for development projects, like a custom all-electric 25-passenger launch for the Appalachian Mountain Club and another limited production model, Boston Boatworks’ own BB52, an ocean-rated luxury cruiser coming in 2023!

In addition to our New Construction Team, we have a Customer Care Team who provide full yard services, repairs, custom refits, and concierge care as well as indoor / outdoor storage.

Facility

Our factory and business offices are located on the historic Boston Inner Harbor. Our main building was custom designed for our processes. A climate-controlled, 35,000 sq. ft. composite shop with a clear span of 70 ft. and a ceiling height of 25 ft. Within the building, there are two giant ovens—big enough to cure one-piece epoxy laminates for a 70-ft. hull. We have 5- and 10-ton overhead cranes and truck-accessible overhead doors at bothends. The 70’ x 300’ main assembly floor has access to our 75-ton Travelift, a 60’ x 19’ pier, and 10 in-water slips at the waterside for commissioning and service. An additional 30,000 SF in other buildings houses Service, Repair, Storage and production support operations.

Technology

BB proprietary composite processes, materials and methods and materials are curated from over 27 years experience to match the intent of every design we build today.

Our typical high-performance projects demand sandwich composite construction with special formulation epoxy laminating resin. Resin ratios are mechanically controlled through wet/pre-preg method into stitched bi-axial E-glass/carbon fiber cloth reinforcements and precision placed in-mold with thermo-formed SAN closed-cell foam core. Laminates are consolidated under vacuum and oven post-cured. When appropriate, we use resin infusion lamination processes in both epoxy and vinylester resin.

Each team in New Construction and Customer Care follows standards for best methods to meet ABYC, CE and CG requirements, borrowing the best from Aviation Airframe / Powerplant QC, marine-tech certified programs and modern craftsmanship.

Our construction methods require better engineering, better craftsmanship, better quality control, better equipment, and better facilities. But they produce durable boats and loyal customers and serve our mission to build the best.
